In short
ISO 50001 is the international standard for energy management systems. Equas helps organisations implement and certify to ISO 50001, establishing energy baselines, performance indicators and improvement processes that reduce consumption, and which can also serve as an alternative compliance route for ESOS.
What a iso 50001 energy management involves
ISO 50001 differs from most management system standards in one useful respect: it is expected to produce a measurable financial return. Energy is a cost line, and a system that manages it properly reduces that line.
The standard requires you to understand where energy is used, establish a baseline, set energy performance indicators, plan and deliver improvements, and demonstrate that performance has actually improved. That last requirement is unusual. Most standards ask you to manage a process. ISO 50001 asks you to prove the numbers moved.
Organisations pursue it for three reasons, often together. The cost saving is the obvious one. The second is customer and tender pressure, since energy and carbon questions now appear routinely in procurement. The third is ESOS: certification covering your total energy consumption is an alternative route to ESOS compliance, which means one investment satisfies both an obligation and an opportunity.
Implementation follows the same pattern as our other standards work, through either a Full System Build or an Assisted System Build, and it integrates cleanly with ISO 14001 in particular. If you already hold ISO 14001, a good deal of the context, legal, competence and audit machinery is already in place.
A realistic note: ISO 50001 needs decent energy data. Organisations with half-hourly metering and a few years of consumption history get to a baseline quickly. Organisations working from quarterly bills across several sites have a data exercise to do first. That is manageable, but it is worth knowing at the start rather than discovering in month three.
Who it is for
Working towards certification
Suits energy-intensive operations, organisations facing tender questions on energy and carbon, and ESOS-qualifying businesses looking to satisfy the obligation through certification instead.
Already certified
If you hold ISO 14001, adding ISO 50001 is a comparatively small step, since the context, legal, competence and audit processes largely carry across.
What is included
Where energy is used, how much, and the baseline everything else is measured against.
Measures that reflect how your organisation actually uses energy, rather than generic metrics.
The areas where attention produces the largest return.
Objectives, targets and action plans with an expected return attached to each.
Delivered as a Full System Build or an Assisted System Build, as you prefer.
Where you already hold ISO 14001, much of the supporting machinery is reused rather than rebuilt.
Certification covering total energy consumption can satisfy ESOS instead of separate energy audits.
How it works
- 1
Energy data review
We assess what consumption data you have and what needs to be measured before a baseline is possible.
- 2
Energy review and baseline
Significant energy uses identified and a baseline established.
- 3
Indicators and objectives
Performance indicators and improvement objectives set with realistic targets.
- 4
System build
The management system documented and implemented, integrated with any existing standards.
- 5
Internal audit and management review
Completed and evidenced ahead of certification.
- 6
Certification
Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits with a UKAS-accredited certification body.
